Cinobo Maskot: Athens’ new Open-Air Cinema opens in Heroes of National Defence Park

1 min read

Athens has welcomed a new destination for film lovers with the opening of Cinobo Maskot, a fully renovated open-air cinema located in Heroes of National Defence Park in Tavros. Officially opening its doors on 2 July, the venue aims to reshape the city’s summer cinema scene with a programme that goes far beyond conventional film screenings.

Throughout the summer, Cinobo Maskot will host curated event screenings presented by film critic Akis Kapranos, featuring special screenings, Midnight Express sessions, director tributes, horror nights, contemporary Greek cinema, Studio Ghibli evenings, and many more themed events designed to bring audiences together around a shared love of cinema.

More than just another summer cinema, Cinobo Maskot aspires to become a cultural meeting point for cinephiles, offering carefully selected films that extend beyond mainstream releases while contributing to the revitalisation of an overlooked Athenian neighbourhood and its lush public park, just 12 minutes from the city centre.

July Programme Highlights

The venue launches its first month with a series of recurring themed events:

  • Director’s Tributes – Celebrating visionary filmmakers including Park Chan-wook, David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick and Stavros Tsiolis.
  • Studio Ghibli Nights – Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved animated masterpieces under the stars.
  • Bleak Fridays – Every Friday explores cinema at its darkest, most unsettling and emotionally intense.
  • Cannon VHS Classics – Cult action favourites and overlooked gems from the legendary Cannon Films catalogue.
  • It’s All Greek to Me – A showcase of the exciting new generation of Greek cinema.
  • More Than Fear – Horror films with social depth, psychological intensity and contemporary relevance.
  • VHS Nightmares – B-movies, cult classics and forgotten horror discoveries inspired by the VHS era.

Visitors can also take advantage of free guarded parking, while a special 2-for-1 introductory ticket offer is available through More.com until 8 July.

A Cinema with a New Beginning

Originally opened in 1990 on Konstantinoupoleos Avenue inside Heroes of National Defence Park, Maskot gradually fell into decline and operated with a limited programme for several years.

Recognising Cinobo’s successful track record in revitalising historic cinemas, the Municipality of Moschato-Tavros invited the team to take over the venue and transform it into a vibrant new cultural destination.

Located just a short drive from central Athens, Cinobo Maskot combines easy access, ample free parking and ambitious programming to create a new home for open-air cinema turning a neglected venue into a lively gathering place for audiences who enjoy watching films beneath the summer sky.
