Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman will appear in Athens for a rare public conversation, followed by screenings of two short films, including How to Shoot a Ghost, his latest work filmed entirely in the Greek capital.
Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, the visionary behind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich, and Adaptation, will visit Athens for a special cinematic event at the historic Stella Open-Air Cinema on Thursday, July 2.
The evening opens with a live public conversation and Q&A, offering audiences a rare opportunity to hear Kaufman discuss his creative process, filmmaking, and storytelling. The discussion will feature screenwriter Eva H.D., filmmaker Konstantinos Karamagkiolis, and additional guest speakers, while film critic Akis Kapranos will moderate the event.
Following the discussion, audiences will watch two short films: Kaufman’s How to Shoot a Ghost (2025), which had its world premiere at the 2025 Venice Film Festival and was filmed entirely in Athens, and Abel (2024), directed by Konstantinos Karamagkiolis. Together, the two films explore memory, identity, spirituality, and the emotional landscapes of contemporary life through distinct cinematic languages.

How to Shoot a Ghost, written by Eva H.D. and starring Jessie Buckley and Josef Akiki Alayn, follows two ghosts wandering through Athens, confronting desire, regret, and the city’s layered history. Abel tells the story of a priest whose life is profoundly unsettled after an unexpected phone call, setting him on a deeply personal journey between faith, family, and redemption.
The event offers Greek audiences a unique opportunity to meet one of contemporary cinema’s most influential writers while experiencing two thought-provoking works that bridge international and Greek independent filmmaking.
