The official opening ceremony of ANIMASYROS 2024 powered by PPC was held at the fully packed Apollon Theater in Hermoupolis
With an impressive ceremony at the iconic Apollon Theater in Hermoupolis the 17th ANIMASYROS 2024 powered by PPC International Animation Festival officially kicked off on the evening of Wednesday, September 25. The event is co-organized with the Municipality of Syros-Hermoupolis, the South Aegean Region, and the Cyclades Chamber of Commerce. The official sponsor of ANIMASYROS is PPC, the leading energy company in Southeastern Europe, actively supporting arts and culture.
The main presenter of the event was the President of ANIMASYROS, Vassilis K. Karamitsanis, who declared the official opening of the festival and welcomed the audience to this year’s event with the main theme “Africa: A Continent of Animation”. The event, with simultaneous interpretation in Greek sign language, was broadcast live in Miaouli Square and online.

This year’s ANIMASYROS 2024, powered by PPC, kicked off with a pop-up opera concert featuring the acclaimed mezzo-soprano Artemis Bogri, accompanied by pianist Dimitris Yiakas.
Immediately after, the festival showcased Isabel Herguera‘s award-winning animated film Sultana’s Dream, a co-production between Germany and Spain. The story follows Inés, a Spanish artist residing in India, who stumbles upon Sultana’s Dream, a feminist science fiction narrative penned by Rokeya Hossain in Bengal in 1905. The tale envisions Ladyland, a utopia where women govern and men are secluded, taking on domestic responsibilities. Captivated by this vision, Inés sets off on a journey through India, seeking the one place where women can truly live in peace. The screening was accompanied by a presentation from the director herself, along with co-writer Gianmarco Serra.

The Festival’s award ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, September 28, at 20:00, at the Apollo Theatre. ANIMASYROS 2024, powered by PPC, will conclude on Sunday evening, September 29, with the avant-premiere of the film Looney Tunes: Porky and Duffy Save the Earth, supported by Feelgood Entertainment.
