The ancient landscape of Crete is set to welcome an extraordinary encounter between archaeology and contemporary dance. On 26 and 27 June 2026, the Eleutherna Archaeological Museum will host CORYBANTES, a site-specific production created through a collaboration between Professor Nikos Stampolidis and Studio Simkin, the creative platform founded by internationally acclaimed dancer Daniil Simkin.
Produced and commissioned by the Friends of the Eleutherna Archaeological Museum, the event transforms the museum grounds into a stage where myth, history, and movement converge. At its centre is the world premiere of a new contemporary ballet by choreographer Andrey Kaidanovskiy, created specifically for Eleutherna and performed outdoors on a specially constructed stage in front of the museum.
The production brings together an exceptional cast of internationally celebrated dancers: Maria Kochetkova, Rebecca Horner, Tess Voelker, and Daniil Simkin. Presented in the geographical heart of the myth that inspired it, CORYBANTES invites audiences to experience an intimate dialogue between the ancient world and the expressive possibilities of contemporary dance.
The project explores the relationship between the fleeting nature of performance and the enduring presence of archaeology. While dance exists only in the moment, the museum and its collections stand as lasting witnesses to human history. This contrast forms the conceptual foundation of the production, reflecting Professor Stampolidis’ belief that museums are ultimately shaped by human stories and experiences.
Central to this vision is the idea of Ancestral Intelligence, a concept proposed by Stampolidis as a reflection on memory, heritage, and the transmission of creativity across generations. In CORYBANTES, this continuity is embodied through the physical presence and artistry of the dancers themselves.
The production also draws inspiration from Heraclitus’ notion of Palintonos Harmonia, a harmony born from opposing forces. Antiquity and contemporaneity, permanence and movement, mythology and lived experience coexist throughout the evening, creating a dialogue that feels both timeless and immediate.

This interplay extends to the costumes, designed by the Greek fashion house Zeus + Dione under the creative direction of Marios Schwab. Combining architectural precision with fluid movement, the garments are conceived as an extension of the dancers’ bodies, translating motion into a visual expression of the work’s central themes.
Alongside Kaidanovskiy’s world premiere, the programme features a selection of works by some of the most influential voices in contemporary ballet and dance, including Benjamin Millepied’s Closer, Maurice Béjart’s Lohengrin, Alexander Ekman’s Cacti, Tess Voelker’s spurt, and Ben Van Cauwenbergh’s Les Bourgeois.
Together, these works transform the archaeological site into a living stage where the enduring presence of the past meets the immediacy of performance, offering a rare cultural experience in one of Crete’s most remarkable historical settings.
